On this page you find some of the tools used in the maintenance of Bonsai. For a
beginner, I do recommend a pair of concave cutters, shears and wire cutters to
start with. The rest can be purchased as needed. If you are looking for tools,

of the vendors listed will have tools for sale.

Leaf Trimmers are used
to trim leaves and small buds. |

Bud-trimming
shears are used for trimming leaves, buds and small
caliper branches. Long handles makes it easier when trying to get
into hard to reach areas. |

Large Handled Shears
are used for light branch cutting and trimming medium to smaller
sized roots. |
 |
Concave Cutter are
used for cutting branches flush to the trunk. |
 |
Stub Cutter are
used for making recessed cuts into the trunk when removing
branches. |
 |
Wire cutter are
used to remove the wire applied to the trunks and branches
during styling. |
 |
Pliers are used during
the application of wire and for jinning trunks and branches. |
 |
Saws are used to remove
heavier branches. |
 |
Root cutter/Trunk splitters
are used to remove
large roots and splitting trunks. |
 |
Wire
is used to shape branches and smaller trunks into the desired style. |
 |
Root rakes are used used to untangle roots during
repotting. |
 |
Tweezers are used to
remove debris and to hold branches out of the way when pruning. |
 |
Sieves are used to strain soil to desired size. |
 |
Chopsticks
are used during repotting to ensure air pockets are removed from
under and around the roots. Roots left exposed in air pockets will
die. Chopsticks can also be stuck into the pot and used as a
watering gauge. |

Sealer is used to cover
wounds created during pruning. It comes in both a paste (pictured )
and in a putty form. |

Brooms are used to clean debris off the soil. |
