Bonsai Tool Page

On this page you find some of the tools used in the maintenance of Bonsai. For a beginner, I do recommend a pair of concave cutters, shears and wire cutters to start with. The rest can be purchased as needed. If you are looking for tools, be sure to check out my vendors page as almost all of the vendors listed will have tools for sale.

Leaf Trimmers are used to trim leaves and small buds.
Twig trimming shears Bud-trimming shears are used for trimming leaves, buds and small caliper branches. Long handles makes it easier when trying to get into hard to reach areas.
Root shears Large Handled Shears are used for light branch cutting and trimming medium to smaller sized roots.
Concave cutters Concave Cutter are used for cutting branches flush to the trunk.
yattoko Stub Cutter are used for making recessed cuts  into the trunk when removing branches.
Wire cutter are used to remove the wire applied to the trunks and branches during styling.
Pliers are used during the application of wire and for jinning trunks and branches.
Saws are used to remove heavier branches.
Root cutter/Trunk splitters are used to remove large roots and splitting trunks.
Wire is used to shape branches and smaller trunks into the desired style.
Root rakes are used used to untangle roots during repotting.
Tweezers are used to remove debris and to hold branches out of the way when pruning.
Sieves are used to strain soil to desired size.
Chopsticks are used during repotting to ensure air pockets are removed from under and around the roots. Roots left exposed in air pockets will die. Chopsticks can also be stuck into the pot and used as a watering gauge.
Sealer is used to cover wounds created during pruning. It comes in both a paste (pictured ) and in a putty form.
Brooms are used to clean debris off the soil.
