My philosophy in regards to bonsai is to keep it simple. Bonsai should reflect trees in nature and I feel that if you follow the basic rules of the Buddhist you will be happy with most of your bonsai. The Buddhist approach to bonsai is to create a natural look, simple and asymmetrical. This simple approach for creating bonsai has been refined by the Japanese but it's evident that the Buddhist influence is still present in bonsai styling today.
Another fact of life that I have come to except is that trees die. You must learn from your mistakes to avoid killing trees in the future. I also believe that you should learn about a species of tree before you buy one. You need to make sure that you buy trees that you are able to care for properly. For example, you need to know if a tree needs to go a period of dormancy and if so do you live in a climate that can provide it. Light is also an important factor. Can you supply the properly amount of light that the tree needs to keep it healthy. By learning about a species before you buy can make your bonsai experience a happier one.
